Sunny Day - Day Support Services Sunny Day Day Support is a joyful, energetic, and inclusive program located in the heart of Staunton, Virginia! We proudly serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them live vibrant, fulfilling, and connected lives. At Sunny Day, every moment is an opportunity to grow, laugh, learn, and shine. Our center offers both group and one-on-one activities that empower individuals to build confidence, foster friendships, and thrive in their daily routines. Location: 1011 N Augusta Street, Suite A & B Staunton, Virginia 24401 Eligibility Requirements: We welcome individuals who meet the following criteria: 18 years of age or older A documented intellectual or developmental disability as defined by DBHDS An active Individual Support Plan (ISP) that includes day support services Approved funding through a Medicaid waiver (Building Independence, Family and Individual Support, or Community Living) The ability to safely participate in a center-based day program with available supports Our enrollment process includes an intake meeting, review of documentation, and coordination with the individual's support team to ensure that services are a good match. We are happy to assist families and support coordinators with each step of the process. Staff-to-Individual Ratio: We proudly follow Virginia's staffing requirements with a 1:5 staff-to-individual ratio. This ensures personalized support, positive interactions, and lots of encouragement throughout the day. Our team receives ongoing training in person-centered practices, communication support, safety protocols, and inclusive programming. Each team member is dedicated to creating a safe, empowering environment where individuals are supported in making choices, trying new things, and reaching their goals. What a Day Looks Like at Sunny Day: Each day at Sunny Day Day Support brings a unique blend of fun, structure, and personalized support. In our center-based program, individuals enjoy a variety of activities in a familiar and nurturing environment. This may include group learning sessions, creative expression through arts and crafts, interactive games, music and movement, sensory experiences, and wellness activities. We also offer themed days and educational sessions that focus on developing real-life skills. On days when we venture into the community, participants have opportunities to experience the world beyond our walls. We go bowling every Thursday, visit local shops and restaurants, explore parks and trails, and attend local events whenever possible. These outings are planned with individual preferences and abilities in mind and provide natural opportunities to build social connections, practice skills in real-world settings, and have a great time. Our team ensures that each outing is well-supported, accessible, and engaging for all. Skill Building: We absolutely love helping individuals grow their confidence, expand their skills, and take meaningful steps toward greater independence! Whether it’s mastering how to read and follow a visual schedule, developing practical money management habits, or strengthening communication through expressive language exercises, every skill-building opportunity is meaningful and purposeful. Our staff use creative, hands-on strategies and personalized teaching techniques to make learning exciting and rewarding. We break tasks down into manageable steps, celebrate each achievement—no matter how small—and adapt activities to match individual strengths and learning styles. Some individuals work on social skills in group activities, while others may build vocational readiness through light office tasks, organizing materials, or helping with set-up duties. We also support skill-building around problem-solving, emotional regulation, and health management. Each success adds up, and we make sure everyone feels proud of what they accomplish. From life skills to soft skills, we’re building not just independence, but also self-esteem and a sense of capability that individuals carry with them beyond the center. It’s about creating moments of growth that are joyful, affirming, and empowering every single day. Sunny Haven Residential Services (SHRS) is currently accepting inquiries for our residential programs and maintaining waitlists for select services. At this time, we have one active waitlist — for Community Engagement. We do not yet have a projected date for when waitlists will reopen, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue serving individuals already enrolled in these programs. Group Home Services At Sunny Haven, our Group Home Services provide safe, supportive, and comfortable living environments for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We believe that everyone deserves a home where they feel valued, empowered, and part of a community. Our homes are much more than just places to live—they are places where individuals can grow, gain independence, and experience a true sense of belonging. Sunny Haven partners with Providers from across Virginia who open their homes to individuals and operate under our license. These homes are selected and maintained to ensure they offer a warm, welcoming, and family-like environment—never institutional or clinical in feel. Whether it’s sharing a meal at the kitchen table, planting flowers in the yard, or simply enjoying a movie night with housemates, our group homes provide a rich and fulfilling everyday life. What We Offer: Sunny Haven’s Group Home Services include a wide range of supports that are carefully tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each resident: 24/7 supervision and support provided by trained, compassionate Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) Personalized assistance with daily living activities, including bathing, grooming, dressing, and meal preparation Medication administration, documentation, and coordination with doctors, pharmacies, and healthcare providers Transportation to medical appointments, day programs, shopping trips, religious services, and community events Daily and weekly skill-building activities focused on independence, safety, communication, and personal development Recreational and social opportunities, such as arts and crafts, music sessions, outings to local parks, and game nights Ongoing support with housekeeping, laundry, hygiene, money management, and community access Our homes are structured to support routine, stability, and a high quality of life. We promote a balance of independence and assistance so that residents can thrive at their own pace, make meaningful choices, and enjoy each day with dignity. A Place to Belong: Sunny Haven operates several small, family-style group homes across many areas of Virginia, including Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Lexington, Buena Vista, Staunton, Augusta County, Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft, Churchville, Goshen, Amherst, Madison Heights, Forest, Bedford, Monroe, Lynchburg, and Goode. Each home typically serves three to four individuals, which allows for a personalized and peaceful environment where relationships can grow naturally. Bedrooms are decorated according to each person’s tastes, and individuals are encouraged to make their space their own. Common areas are shared with housemates and include kitchens, living rooms, dining areas, and outdoor spaces. Daily routines are built around individual preferences, with flexibility for personal activities and interests. From preparing a favorite breakfast to celebrating birthdays and holidays together, our homes are filled with connection and community. Our staff actively work to foster friendships, encourage participation, and create positive shared experiences in the home. Program Oversight: Every group home is assigned a dedicated Program Manager who works closely with the Program Director, the Provider, families, support coordinators or case managers, and the individuals themselves. This collaborative approach ensures each home operates smoothly, follows regulatory standards, and most importantly, reflects the needs and values of the people who live there. Our Program Managers are actively involved in team meetings, support planning, problem-solving, and ongoing quality improvement efforts. They serve as the primary point of contact for all involved and are deeply committed to ensuring a safe, respectful, and enriching environment. Program Managers visit each group home at least once a month to provide in-person oversight, support Providers, and ensure that quality standards and individual needs are consistently being met. Person-Centered Living: Our approach to care is grounded in person-centered principles. Every individual supported in our group homes has a Person-Centered Plan that is informed by their Individual Support Plan (ISP), developed in collaboration with the individual, their family, support coordinator, and clinical professionals. These plans outline strengths, preferences, desired outcomes, routines, and needed supports. We recognize that every person is unique, and we honor those differences by listening, adapting, and providing supports that align with each individual’s goals and lifestyle. Whether someone needs help preparing meals, attending community activities, or building life skills, our dedicated staff are here to provide encouragement and structure every step of the way. We also support regular team meetings, family involvement, and consistent communication to ensure each individual’s needs are met with compassion, respect, and accountability. At Sunny Haven, person-centered living means more than just planning—it’s a way of life. Eligibility: To be eligible for our Group Home Services, individuals must: Be 18 years or older Have a documented intellectual or developmental disability, as defined by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) Require 24-hour supervision or support for health, safety, or personal care needs Have an active Medicaid waiver (Community Living) or private funding source Demonstrate a willingness to participate in shared living and receive support in a community-based setting Our intake process includes a thorough review of documentation, compatibility assessment with current residents, and a collaborative discussion with families, guardians, and support coordinators to ensure the best possible fit.
