We proudly follow Virginia's staffing requirements with a 1:5 staff-to-individual ratio. This ensures personalized support, positive interactions, and lots of encouragement throughout the day. Each team member is dedicated to creating a safe, empowering environment where individuals are supported in making choices, trying new things, and reaching their goals.
What a Day Looks Like at Sunny Day:
Each day at Sunny Day Day Support brings a unique blend of fun, structure, and personalized support. In our center-based program, individuals enjoy a variety of activities in a familiar and nurturing environment. This may include group learning sessions, creative expression through arts and crafts, interactive games, music and movement, sensory experiences, and wellness activities. We also offer themed days and educational sessions that focus on developing real-life skills.
On days when we venture into the community, participants have opportunities to experience the world beyond our walls. We go bowling every Thursday, visit local shops and restaurants, explore parks and trails, and attend local events whenever possible. These outings are planned with individual preferences and abilities in mind and provide natural opportunities to build social connections, practice skills in real-world settings, and have a great time. Our team ensures that each outing is well-supported, accessible, and engaging for all.
Skill Building:
We absolutely love helping individuals grow their confidence, expand their skills, and take meaningful steps toward greater independence! Whether it’s mastering how to read and follow a visual schedule, developing practical money management habits, or strengthening communication through expressive language exercises, every skill-building opportunity is meaningful and purposeful. Our staff use creative, hands-on strategies and personalized teaching techniques to make learning exciting and rewarding. We break tasks down into manageable steps, celebrate each achievement—no matter how small—and adapt activities to match individual strengths and learning styles. Some individuals work on social skills in group activities, while others may build vocational readiness through light office tasks, organizing materials, or helping with set-up duties. We also support skill-building around problem-solving, emotional regulation, and health management. Each success adds up, and we make sure everyone feels proud of what they accomplish. From life skills to soft skills, we’re building not just independence, but also self-esteem and a sense of capability that individuals carry with them beyond the center. It’s about creating moments of growth that are joyful, affirming, and empowering every single day.
Recreational Opportunities:
At Sunny Day, we believe life should be filled with joy, color, and moments that spark happiness! That’s why our program is bursting with engaging recreational opportunities designed to inspire creativity, encourage exploration, and promote fun-filled social interaction. From hands-on crafting projects and spirited music sessions to lively sensory play and outdoor nature walks, our activities are as diverse and vibrant as the individuals we support. We tailor our experiences to meet a variety of interests and abilities, ensuring that everyone finds something they enjoy. Our regular community outings add even more excitement to the week—whether it’s a scenic picnic in the park, a stroll through the local farmer’s market, or a trip to a museum or local event. We also host indoor events like themed parties and bowling days. These outings and special events help individuals experience the world beyond the center in a way that feels safe, empowering, and full of possibilities. Every day is an opportunity to laugh, move, connect, and create joyful memories together. Laughter, smiles, and shared fun aren’t just occasional—they’re an essential part of every single day at Sunny Day!
Person-Centered Support:
Each individual’s day is guided by their Person Centered Plan, built directly from their ISP and created with their voice at the center. This plan serves as a personalized roadmap that helps ensure every aspect of the individual's day supports their goals and preferences. We celebrate what makes each person unique—whether it's their sense of humor, creativity, curiosity, or resilience—and we tailor every experience to reflect their interests, strengths, and dreams. From the moment someone walks through our doors, they are treated with dignity, kindness, and an eagerness to understand what brings them joy and purpose. Our team collaborates closely with families, guardians, and support coordinators to create a supportive circle that keeps everyone informed and aligned. We communicate regularly, make adjustments when needed, and always put the individual’s voice first. Our goal is to make sure that every day is not only structured and purposeful but also filled with moments of joy, confidence, and personal accomplishment. The relationship we build with each individual is grounded in trust, consistency, and the shared belief that they are capable of amazing things.
